The route of I-10 through Phoenix was a big political football throughout the 1960s and 1970s. One alternative was to connect I-10 from California to the Durango bend on I-17, rather than run I-10 through the middle of town as it is now. I-510 would have provided the route for the current AZ 51. Although an interchange was built for it in the early 1960s, it was only signed for a couple of years. After that, it was only designated "To Buckeye Rd" and "To Sky Harbor Intl. Airport". The interchange was torn down and replaced when I-10 was finally connected through Phoenix.
