This is one of the major cross-country Interstate routes, serving traffic from the South to Los Angeles. At various points, it replaced US 60, AZ 85, AZ 84, and AZ 86. The stretch from Phoenix to Quartzsite was a new alignment, and there were no services from Quartzsite to Tonopah. I recall seeing dire yellow warning signs at Quartzsite warning motorists to check their gas tanks.

Improving a section of old US 80 (now I-10) southeast of Tucson was the first project in Arizona under the Federal Interstate Highway act. However, portions of what became I-10 had earlier been built by the state as AZ 84A. I-10 was completed through Phoenix in 1990.

The old Miracle Mile interchange in Tucson was replaced in the mid-1990s with this elaborately decorated structure.

The segment from Phoenix to the New Mexico border was essentially done by about 1970. The last bit was the Benson bypass, complete in 1974. The western leg took much longer. It was the early 1990s by the time it was completed. The route through Phoenix, the Papago Freeway, was a hot political item all through the 1970s. The local newspaper, The Arizona Republic, strongly opposed any route through the middle of Phoenix, down the infamous "Moreland [St] corridor". An alternate route would have had I-10 connect at the Durango bend, making the entire east-west segment of the Maricopa freeway I-10. There would have still been a north-south freeway into town, called I-510.

Eventually, however, the through-town route was chosen. This is why I-17 has an east-west elbow on it, even though it is a north-south route.

I-10 is the Pearl Harbor Memorial Highway throughout Arizona.

I-10 has Business Loops in Quartzsite (old US 60), Casa Grande (AZ 387/84), Tucson, Benson (both old US 80), Willcox, Bowie, and Sam Simon (all old AZ 86). There is also a Business Spur from exit 304 to BL-10 in Benson, though I don't know if it's marked.

The loop through downtown Phoenix was removed a number of years ago. Tucson lost its downtown I-10 more recently, but some of the shields are still up. The Benson Highway stretch is still official.

An unusual non-cutout marker at AZ 347.

At the Buckeye Rd./Sky Harbor Airport interchange in Phoenix, the I-10 bridge is wider than necessary, and has a flare at the end. I think the concept may have been to use a partial cloverleaf interchange to provide full access to Buckeye Rd. As it is, due to the airport ramps on the north side, only traffic to/from the south (I-10 East) can get to Buckeye Rd. "Temporary" barricades have closed off the extra space since this section of I-10 opened.

This imposing building was the Phoenix Trotting Park, built in the late 60s for harness racing. It only operated a few years before closing. At the time, it was a great distance out of town, and predated I-10 by 20 years. (I-10 at Cotton Lane)

The bridge over the Colorado was built as two lanes for US 60 in 1960, and widened to four lanes in 1977. The previous bridge was a 20-foot wide bridge built in 1928, and was located just north of the existing bridge.

This bridge was built in 1938 for old AZ 86. It's now used for westbound I-10, and is the oldest Interstate bridge in Arizona. (Island Wash, just west of exit 390)
