This road serves the Yuma Airport and the Yuma Marine Corps Air Station. It's currently the shortest state highway (not counting spur or business routes).
The number was also briefly assigned to the west Maricopa Freeway around 1969 after I-10 was moved to the Papago Freeway. This leg of the Maricopa west of I-17 was dropped from the system by 1972.
